KCHO (Alexis Leyva Machado) (1970)
Message in a bottle, 1999, Wooden table-base, three metal oars, metal clamps, wooden drawer with glass bottle containing an American flag. 300 x 200 x 150 cm

Kcho's enterprise balances the inexhaustible human desire for a better life with precarious poetic devices that represent our desperate attempt to reach such destinations. His constructions are inaccurate instruments residing in the imagination: they lead to the pot of gold but all-too-often run off course.

We catch a glimpse of Statue of Liberty from afar only to find a table with no top to support our dinner and an empty bottle with a flag in place of our wine. The nightmare spins the oars in midair as the voyagers drown, while hope, trapped in a glass bottle, remains afloat to greet more souls in search of a better life.
