unauthorized histories
Authors' authorization

The twenty-two artworks that comprise Unauthorized Histories are inspired by the lives and oeuvres of the twenty-two 20th and 21st century artists to which they are ascribed. These objects carry dates from 1913 to 2008, spanning the approximately 100-year history of modern and contemporary art, and are presented in the form of a group show. Each inspired artwork is accompanied by a text that conflates actual and fabricated information, which is intended to bestow authenticity on the specific events and creative practice that generated it. These unauthorized histories and the artworks they document implicate the extent of influence that accepted history and authorship exerts in determining our perception of the artistic process and the value of art itself.

All objects comprising Unauthorized Histories were created entirely and exclusively by Charalambos & Vaso Sergiou specifically for this project and are integral to it. Likewise, all texts have been written by the two artists unless otherwise noted. The authors hold the rights to the exhibition installation as a whole and to all objects therein, none of which may be purchased or exhibited individually.
